Sparks collaborates with celebrity chef, Michael Schulson, to design and produce the hot, new, Asian-style, Philadelphia-based Sampan restaurant. A culinary experience with an up-close and personal view of the chef and his food.
Sparks drives the architectural design from experience mapping, material selection, furniture design and fabrication, to collateral design, graphic production as well as name and logo development. The 3000 sq. ft. layout promotes flow of energy into and through the space, integrates the bar, seating areas and kitchen. It provides ease of use for staff and allows guests to see what Shulson is cooking in the kitchen. Functional elements integrate into the architecture to make the most of the space as well as enhance the look and feel. Concrete, brushed steel and reclaimed wood exude a high-end, masculine feel with a natural aesthetic.
Architectural highlights include; a black walnut slab bar with unfinished edges, custom tables and banquettes, windows and mirrors to create privacy, wood ceiling planks over the tables that hide lighting and create a sense of intimacy, custom hanging shelves in the kitchen, custom LED light design that incorporates graphic wall treatments and creates a soft ambiance, and menu holders, business collateral and a large back wall mural that incorporates antique Asian comics.
Sampan restaurant receives rave reviews for both food and environment including Yelp, Zagat, Philly.com, the Philly Dish, Philadelphia Magazine and the Philadelphia Inquirer. The consensus takeaway—Sampan is the perfect, intimate space for guests to experience Chef Schulson’s concept of fun, modern, small Asian plates.
