A new fixture system and design for New Balance Factory Stores

The Background

At New Balance, the job is to aid athletes in their pursuit of excellence, whether that means helping professional athletes set records and win medals, or propelling everyday athletes to achieve a new PR, run their first 5K or just to live a more healthy and active lifestyle. The New Balance Factory Store retail experience drives the NB philosophy, “we were born to move.”

For the last decade, our teams have been partnering with New Balance to bring multiple Factory Store branded locations to fruition. So when they approached us with a new vision for the overall design aesthetic of the Factory Store program, we couldn’t wait to bring their refreshed ideas to life.

From a design and build perspective, our scope included an updated take on durable finishes and materials such as powder-coated steel, perforated multi-tone panels, color core laminates, illuminated PVC, glass, wire, and acrylics. Beyond that, we needed to bring a greater sense of ease and security by reducing implementation timelines, achieving cost savings, enabling additional store expansion, and most importantly, elevating and strengthening the New Balance brand.

The Solution

Our design and engineering teams coordinated with New Balance to implement several value engineered offerings. We produced custom program prototypes in our import facilities, which we reviewed in person with New Balance’s team in our Shanghai headquarters.

Post-production, we released two international store locations, shipping direct from Sparks Shanghai to Japan. We also monitored and adhered to international pandemic regulations and social distancing practices.

The Results

The project resulted in a new fixture system that facilitates multiple SKU presentations including footwear, apparel and accessories. Not only does the system decrease fixture installation time, it also maximizes display flexibility and allows for a refreshed New Balance Factory Store retail experience.

  • New design and value engineering package
  • 55+ custom fixtures and merchandise items
  • Full-scale prototypes built and reviewed in Sparks import facilities
