Google's Made with Code Teams Up With Starbucks

October 18, 2016

There’s an emoji for just about everything - pizza, donuts, goats, magician hats, aliens, cruise ships... you name it! But, there are very few emoji that highlight the diversity of women and their career paths. Google's Made with Code brought an in-store experience at Starbucks for the first time ever to give teen girls the chance to code an emoji that highlights what they want to be in this world, and see it come to life on a Starbucks hot chocolate!

On Oct. 5 and Oct. 8, girls came together at Starbucks locations in San Francisco, New York City, Denver, Austin and Seattle to code custom emojis with Blockly. The girls created emojis that reflected what they want to be when they grow up. There were doctors, olympic medal winners, and graduate emojis.  The emojis were then printed onto the foam of their Starbucks beverage using Ripplemaker, a 3-D printing device.

The girls had a positive response to event.  They expressed their impressions by saying " I did not know code could do that" and "this completely changes my perspective on code". The girls that participated felt empowered to go for what they believe in. "If you want to go into computer science you are the one to decided that. Google's made with code event gave young women a voice in the career paths they choose.
