Robotics are changing many industries. What was once employed to assemble cars is now being used to create movies. Robots held cameras in the past but now filmmakers are taking the practice a giant step forward by using them to create amazing illusions. The short film below captures this new technology in action and its part in producing beautiful visual effects.

Bot & Dolly is a design and engineering studio that specializes in automation, robotics and filmmaking. Their latest project raises the bar on visual possibilities of mapped projection. The team created a system they named Box. It uses robotic arms, similar to the ones used in industrial manufacturing, in tandem with precisely controlled mapped projections onto flat surfaces. The 3D effects are stunning. The result is a seamless, morphing environment that challenges the viewer’s sense of space and dimension. Some call it magic, but in reality, it’s top-of-the-line technology.

Projection mapping is used mostly in advertising, at concerts, art installations, and by DJs who use imagery to accompany their music. Box makes a strong argument that projection mapping has a place in the film industry. Bot & Dolly put the technology to test to create the special effects in the movie Gravity. The combination of advanced robotics and and mapped projections make Sandra Bullock floating through the air seem out of this world. This technological breakthrough is literally morphing visual effects in the movie industry.
