Curious about creative leadership? For Creativepool Magazine’s #GettingToKnow segment, Sparks’ Chief Creative Officer (CCO) Mike Ellery shares all the details of his not-so-typical day-to-day—from his nine-to-five, to his five-to-nine.

As CCO, Ellery has a “solid hat rack.” He’s in charge of managing his team, making executive decisions and bringing creative visions to life. In the interview, he shares thoughtful insight as to what makes successful partnerships, as well as predictions of industry trends, technological influence and adaptations. Ellery even shares tips for aspiring creative business leaders.

Beyond learning about the business side of Ellery, Creativepool also opened the floor to true “getting to know you” questions. Turns out, CCO Ellery started his professional life at a small startup in Sydney, Australia, has a lifelong passion for the ocean, and bought a farm ten years ago. The farm’s physical demands along with its outdoor setting keeps Ellery grounded outside of work.

In true-creative fashion, when asked to describe a moment he had to “think outside the box,” Ellery replies, “This question is unfair to boxes! A well-proportioned box can be a perfect solution. Often, it’s not about thinking outside the box but understanding the box and innovating within it."
